TURN A LEAF - Sunderland Echo Literacy Campaign

Campaign launch 3rd Sept ’07 with double-page spread on Monday & additional articles Tuesday 4th – then a feature every week.

Objective: To foster a lifelong love of reading and writing and to demonstrate that this is something everyone could and should do. (NB. The form of words is still under construction).  Click here for further details

Happy 5th Birthday Jubilee Centre

The Jubilee centre invites you to come along to enrol on a course on Friday 14th September get a cuppa and piece of birthday cake.  Course's starting sugar crafts, internet 4 beginners, parchment craft, massage and aromatheraphy, art club, basic computers, greeting card design, ceramics.  For further details contact Margy Heskett Community Education Worker 0191 522 8447.

Sunderland Bangladeshi Community Centre - Family Fun Day

FREE volunteering from Employees

Another great opportunity has come our way that may be of great use to you. I have been approached by HMRC Sunderland Contact Centre who have 8-10 members of staff who would like to donate a day of their time to a local Charity or voluntary organisation. They have suggested they would be interested in working with young people or children, a conservation day or a painting or decorating task but are still open to any other suggestions, as long as it doesn't involve spiders!!  They are looking to do their volunteering any day between Sept and Dec, so if anyone has suggestions of how they could benefit from their help, please get in touch as soon as possible.  If your organisation is interested contact Anna Jones, Volunteer Centre Sunderland. All classes cost £36 for 6 weeks lessons in advance. Lessons should continue until May 2008, student numbers permitting. Half-term holiday is 15th – 26th October 2007. Sunderland CVS Autumn Funding Event
Sunderland Centre for Voluntary Service are holding an Autumn Funding Event on 20th September 2007 at Angel House, Borough Road, Sunderland.  20th September 2007, Registration starts at 9.45am for a 10.15am start.
There will be presentations from: Big Lottery Fund, Coalfields Regeneration Trust, Community Foundation, Lloyds/TSB Foundation, Northern Rock Foundation, and Guest Speaker Ian Dodds from Government Office North East.  The Funding event will close at 12.30pm followed by Lunch and then Sunderland CVS Annual General Meeting starting at 1pm.  For further Information or to book a place please contact Mary Pattinson

Social Enterprise Investment Fund
Description: The Department of Health's Social Enterprise Investment Fund (SEIF) provides financial support to social enterprise pathfinders and other organisations which are, or are aiming to become, social enterprises delivering one or more health and/or social care services. Funding can be in the form of loans, grants and equity capital or a mixture of these, depending on the recipient organisation's needs and structure. View scheme

Neighbourhood Police Forums

We have been holding Neighbourhood Police forums for the past couple of months. The concept behind these forums is that local residents can come and speak to their local officers and tell us of any problems/incidents in their area, but away from the police station (which people often see as intimidating). The local officers will be available to speak to and assist with any problems/concerns the public may have. These meetings have yet to "take off" as we have been unable to broadcast them correctly even though the press have been informed.

Our next "Open Forum" is 18th September 3pm-5pm at the Fire Station on North Moor Lane, Farringdon.

Community Health Profile's

The 2007 community health profiles have recently been published (based on Local Authority boundaries), providing a range of information including headline statistics and a health summary which may be of use to some of you, particularly in terms of accessing funding.
