The South Forum's Annual General Meeting (AGM)
On Friday 15th June the AGM was held at St Chad's church hall, this was attended by Local MP for the South area Chris Mullin. The Mayor Les Scott chaired the meeting, Stuart Porthouse was nominated and seconds from the floor as the new chair of the South Forum. The meeting ended with local ladies choir MusicMakers which was a wonderful way to end the AGM. Jackie Nixon Coordinator would like to officially thank the guests who attended the meeting. International IT in the Community Conference
The event, which will be internationally recognised, will be held for the first time in the North East. Based around the core theme of ‘IT in the Community’, the conference will bring together industry leaders including top international names, to discuss current problems faced within communities and how digital inclusion and new technologies & services can provide the necessary solutions. This is taking place on 5th/6th July at St. Peter's Campus, University of Sunderland.

Jubilee Centre - Summer Holidays Boredom Busters
For parents and Kids the Jubilee centre is running a play scheme for the kids and computer course for parents on a Wednesday's and Thursday's in the six weeks holidays. Come along and stick the kids in our play scheme and learn to use computers. Starting Wednesday 1st August 2007. Costs £1 a session children must be aged 5-11yrs old. Victims Fund: Supporting Victims of Hate Crime
Description:
The Government has placed £250,000 into the Victims Fund to develop support for victims of hate crime for the 2007/08 financial year. The grant scheme is open to any organisation in England and Wales with experience and expertise in working with victims of hate crime. This includes organisations in the voluntary sector and statutory bodies such as community safety partnerships. Hate crime is any incident, which constitutes a criminal offence, perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate. Projects are welcomed that tackle hate crime motivated by race, religion, homophobia, transphobia and disability.

VOLUNTEERING OPPORUNITIES |
SUNDERLANDCOMMUNITY FURNITURE are a registered charity who as part of its services collects and restores donated furniture to either be sold onto the general public at one of its furniture stores or to be donated to deserving causes. They are currently looking for volunteers to help assist their drivers when collecting and redistributing furniture or recyclable items. As an assistant, volunteers would be expected to be able to read a map, be physically fit to be able to load and unload the vehicles and undergo a CRB check. They are also looking for volunteers to help as Warehouse assistants. Volunteers again would need to be physically fit to be able to load and unload the vehicles and have good written and verbal communication to enable them to show customers around the warehouse and make any follow up sales, which will involve some paperwork. |
SUNDERLAND VOLUNTEER LIFE BRIGADE is looking for volunteers to train for the Coastal Search and Cliff Rescue Team and the Coastwatch Team. The Search and Rescue volunteers will carry out duties including using all rescue equipment, operating a VHF radio, map reading and administering first aid.
The Coastwatch volunteers will help to identifying ships, taking compass bearings, plotting positions on charts, operating radio’s and radar, making weather reports and understanding tides. You will learn to recognise a vessel, plot its position on a chart and report the incident to Marine Coastguard Rescue Centre by VHF radio. You will also need to observe all coast users (both on the water and shoreline). All posts are open to men and women aged 18 plus no previous experience is necessary for either role as all training will be given.

CANCER RESEARCH UK in association with BUPA are holding a Great Women’s Run along the Seaburn coast in Sunderland on Sunday the 17th of June. To help with this event they are looking for volunteers to join their cheering team who will be positioned around the course who will then cheer and encourage the runners to keep motivated. Volunteers will be provided with branded hats, T-shirts, whistles and horns, which will help them to make as much noise as possible to keep the runners going. The cheering team of volunteers will be expected to arrive on site at 9.30am and leave at approx. 1pm |
