In October Sunderland is having its first ever Celebrating Age Month for older people (50+)
Older People play a very important part in the life of Sunderland and they should be valued and respected
Celebrating Age Month will help to do this and it also aims to let older people know what is happening every day around the City that may be of interest to them and which will help them live active, healthy and independent lives. A directory will be produced listing what’s on every day and several special events, including a Conference at the National Glass Centre, will be organised. Further information and publicity materials will be circulated at a later date. If you want to promote any event during October which you think may be of interest to older people, want to get involved or can help by promoting the month to older people in your groups, please get in touch with Julie Connaughton at Age Concern Sunderland on 5141131.
BBC RAW campaign in Sunderland
As you may be aware, Sunderland will play host to Max and Lara’s Travelling Space Circus (part of the BBC RaW Campaign) on the weekend of the 28th and 29th October. There will be jugglers, clowns, magicians and face-painters present at the event, and a host of activities will be available to try, including story-writing workshops, animation and puppetry. The event will be publicised on local radio and news programmes, as well as through local networks. The BBC are looking for family learning professionals to get involved in the day by providing fun, interactive family learning activities in satellite tents surrounding the main circus. There is also an information tent where local organisations can have a stand. If you would like further information, please read the attached documents. The deadline for submissions to run activities is 17th September. If you have any queries, please contact Lynn Cuthbert at the BBC – her details is on the attached forms. If you do not wish to take part in the event but would like more information about the campaign (there are free resources available if you sign up as a RaW Centre), you should read the ‘RAW UPDATE’ attachment. We are fortunate to have such an event in Sunderland, and I hope that we can make it a success. RAW Update Background and useful information Submission Form

The ARCH Reporting System - a quick reminder!
ARCH is an innovative web-based IT system specifically designed to record, monitor and report on racist incidents. Pioneered by the ARCH Partnership in Newcastle, the system will enable people in Sunderland to report race crime through a variety of sources and agencies. The rationale behind ARCH is that it will ensure there is a quick and efficient way of reporting racist incidents and will enable a range of agencies to work in a more coordinated way. Victims of racist crime will be able to gain access to appropriate support mechanisms and the system will also help to ensure that effective action is taken against perpetrators.
The ARCH system is now live!
On Monday 9th July the ARCH system went live across Sunderland. The free phone number is 08000 778 378. Calls to this number will go directly to the Council's Care Alarm Team. This will ensure that racist incidents can be reported on a 24-hour basis, in addition to face to face reporting at partner locations across the city. Places where people can report are: City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust; City of Sunderland College; North of England Refugee Service; Northumbria Police; Sunderland City Council; Gentoo Sunderland; University of Sunderland; Victim Support Sunderland.
Front-line staff at all the partner agencies are being trained on the ARCH IT system over the summer, ready for the launch of ARCH in autumn. People can report incidents at the minute, however it should be noted that some staff have yet to be trained.
Website
The Sunderland ARCH website can be found at www.sunderland-arch.org.uk It is going live in the next few weeks and will contain information on all the ARCH partner agencies; explain how to report a racist incident to ARCH; as well as news, events and good practice. If your organisation would like to have a link on our website then please email sunderlandarch@sunderland.gov.uk
Please feel free to distribute to your friends, family and colleague with their permission. |
