VOLUNTEERING

FARESHARE is a national charity that redistributes quality surplus foods from the food industry to organisations working with homeless and vulnerable people. It currently requires a range of volunteers to help with its activities. Drivers over the age of 25 years are required to collect and deliver food to projects for homeless people. Navigators are required to compile schedules for the shift and direct drivers to delivery and collection points, sorters are needed to ensure that food is of an acceptable quality for re-distribution and finally office volunteers are required to help out with admin tasks.

DURHAM COUNTY COUNCIL Are looking for drivers and some non-drivers to help with their Books on Wheels Service in the Seaham and Peterlee areas. The service is offered to the elderly and disabled who are unable to access libraries and will involve volunteers helping to collect the books from Seaham library, delivering them to clients noting any requests and returning the old books. This will be a great opportunity for those with an interest in books and reading and of a caring nature. Volunteers will need to be empathetic, a good listener and for the drivers role hold a clean drivers license.

LIFELINE PROJECT SUNDERLAND

Volunteers aged 18+ are required to help provide support to service users and information concerning drug misuse and other drug services. Opportunities also exist for local community integration to inform people about drug misuse and break down barriers that service users encounter. Volunteers will need to be open-minded with issues concerning drugs and have a level of empathy with drug users and have a non-oppressive / judgmental approach.

If you are interested in any of the above opportunities please contact the Volunteer Centre Sunderland on (0191) 567 8902 or call into 4 Toward Road, City Centre, Sunderland. Opening hours are Monday to Friday am 4pm. A postal application service is also available. Alternatively email us at: sunderlandvc@aol.com or visit www.do-it.org.uk
SERVICES

Wearside firstSunderland Supporting Affordable Finance Service

With a new joint venture between Wearside First Credit Union and Sunderland City Council’s network of customer service centres, more local people are enjoying easy access to affordable finance.  With UK personal debt totaling£1.310bn at the end of February 2007 and the estimated spend on credit cards and personal loans to reach £639 billion by 2010, it is now more vital for affordable financial service such as Wearside First Credit Union to make their service more accessible to local people.  Kerry Graham the Development Manager from Wearsidefirst said, “So many people today find themselves in debt situations as more organisations offer financial lending.”   “We understand that many people may require access to a loan for any number of reasons, however providing a loan only solves the problem short term”.  Wearside First Credit Union offers anyone who lives or works in the boundaries of the City of Sunderland access to savings and low cost loan facilities. “The difference between Wearsidefirst and a local lender is we encourage our members to save whilst repaying their loan. This provides them with savings when their loan is repaid.” Said Kerry Graham.

Graham Walton Sunderland City Council’s Customer Relationship Manager said “All of our frontline staff are trained to provide information on Wearsidefirst and can now open accounts at our 9 offices City wide, by working in partnership with Wearsidefirst we are able to inform more people of the affordable finance service which is available to them.”  “We are very grateful for the extended service that the City Council network of Customer Service Centres has offered” said Kerry Graham “This will allow us to provide more people with access to savings and low cost loans, helping them to take control of their finances.”  For further information on how to open an account with Wearsidefirst please visit any of the nine Sunderland Customer Service Centres or call 0191 514 7491 or visit Wearsidefirst Head Office in Waterloo Place.

For further information and interview opportunities please contact: Kerry Graham on 0191 514 7491 or kgraham@wearsidefirst.com, For further information on Wearside First see www.wearsidefirst.com
