Age Concern promotes the wellbeing of all older people throughout the City of Sunderland, to improve their quality of life and help them maintain independence.

The services and activities offered by Age Concern Sunderland include advice and information, advocacy, charity shops, community involvement officer, community shopper bus, companionship, ActivAge (formerly Leisure and Learning) classes.  I.T. drop in centre, day and lunch club services, direct payments, home visits, handyperson referral service, home security and insurance and trading products.

Age Concern also has six forums throughout the city including one in the South.  These forums deal specifically with the issues that concern the 50+ age group and they are always looking to recruit new members.

The Art Studio is a neighbourhood based Arts project in Sunderland, delivering a service to all communities across the city. The Art Studio has a Twenty-year track record of offering a supportive, non–stigmatised environment with free studio space, materials and workshop based arts learning to people who have enduring mental health problems. The ethos of the Art studio is to lead by example, nurture self-reliance and build confidence and self-esteem by offering new ways for people to express themselves and start to find an alternative creative role. This approach has been very successful with many of the Art Studio members, and has enabled them to show their growing confidence by having exhibitions in The Art Studio Gallery.

Meetings are held every first Wednesday in the month in the lounge of the Board Inn at 8.00pm.  Each member pays £10 per month into a savings club, which is returned as prize money at the Herrington Village Show.  The last entry is usually guaranteed about 75% repayment.   Their horticultural section is part of the Herrington Village Show held at Scout Hut, Crow Lane, Middle Herrington.   New members are always welcome and advice and assistance in sourcing leeks is available.

Keyfund provides funds for young people to plan and carry out their own projects. This process enables them to develop skills that have not been gained through other sources. The young people present their idea to a panel who are not judging the value of the actual project, but the groups ability to recognise their learning in organising and planning the project. This allows the young people the opportunity to maintain control of the project from planning to completion whilst accessing 'just in time' support from a trained Keyfund facilitator. There are various levels of progression from the first grant of £250 to level four grants of £2000.

Music Makers Choir meets each Monday evening from 7pm-9pm at the Jubilee Centre, Allendale Road, Farringdon.  Following a brief audition by the Musical Director, anyone with a reasonable voice is able to join the choir of 38 ladies.  The Choir provide concerts throughout the area to various organisations.  They also sing at weddings.  Charges are £40 per concert and the proceeds from these events are distributed amongst local charitable organisations.  They have an annual charity concert each September.

St Chad's is an Anglican (Church of England) church covering the south-west outskirts of Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. The parish serves the areas of Farringdon, Gilley Law/Lakeside and East & Middle Herrington.   The main Sunday worship is the Parish Eucharist at 9.30am. Babies and children of all ages are welcomed in this service. There's a regular pattern of daily worship in the church and in different areas of the parish. This service provides practical help, advice and general support to people living in, or moving into Sunderland.  They work with families, single and older people between the ages of 21-59 years old and with people from all types of tenancies, social landlord/private/owned.  They can take referrals from professional agencies and new and existing residents. 

Their service is free, confidential and encourages you to move your life forward in a postitive way.  They offer help and support in benefit claims, money management and changing utility suppliers.  They can act as an advocate and accompany you to appointments, signpost you to specialist services and help you to access training, as well as getting you involved in your community.

This Group establishes and maintains contact with people who have heart problems and offers both the patient and their relatives mutual help and support to achieve a realistic lifestyle.  They provide a listening ear to both the patient and the carer.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday evening each month at the New Education Centre at Sunderland Royal Hospital.   Throughout the year the Group organises a wide range of activities.  Exercise classes for Group members are held in the Crowtree Leisure Centre Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The Sunderland & Washington Deaf Children’s Society (SWDCS) is made up of the parents and families of deaf/hearing impaired children.  SWDCS covers the entire area within the City of Sunderland boundary, including Sunderland, Washington, Houghton le Spring, Newbottle and Hetton le Hole.  The aim of the group is to promote the needs of children within the community by providing a collective voice to highlight the children’s needs, ensuring that the relevant authorities are aware of those needs.  The Group is also there to support one another by sharing experiences and helping each other through the difficulties faced by families with deaf children.   For more details about the Group contact Marge.

Wear Kids is a free voluntary support scheme for young people aged 8-13 and their families in Sunderland. The main aim is to help young people stay out of trouble and prevent anti social behaviour.
