You can report disability hate to ARCH Sunderland

The hate reporting system, ARCH Sunderland, has worked with the Disability Independent Advisory Group (DIAG) and Sunderland People First to launch the new service supporting victims of, or witnesses to, acts of hate towards disabled people.

Many disabled people say that harassment is an everyday part of their life.

Councillor Tom Foster, Chair of the Safer Sunderland Partnership, said: “It’s a sad fact that people can show hatred towards people with a disability, but unfortunately it does happen. That is why I am delighted that people are now able to report such incidents to ARCH.’’

“The message is clear. If you are a victim or if you witness a hate incident, please tell us because we can help.”

‘Hidden in plain sight’, a recently published report into disability related harassment by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that disabled people often do not report harassment for a number of reasons. This may be because they find it unclear who to report to or they may fear the consequences of reporting. People in Sunderland will now be able to report incidents to ARCH where they will be believed and taken seriously.

Liz Highmore, Co-Chair of the DIAG, said: “There is a lack of reporting of disability hate. Disabled people can sometimes be more isolated and that is why this new service from ARCH is so vital. We need to get the message out to disabled people that they really need to report any incidents of hate towards them, whether it comes from a stranger, a family member, a carer, or anyone else. They no longer need to suffer in silence. There is support out there and they need to make use of it.”

Andrew Fox, Development Worker, Sunderland People First, said: "At times, we all need someone to stand up and support us. Disability hate crime can only be tackled by communities working together and supporting each other. If you see something that you are concerned about, as one of our self-advocates said ‘report it and stop it.“

You can report incidents of disability hate confidentially, day or night, by calling freephone 08000 778 378 or by emailing: sunderlandarch@sunderland.gov.uk. You can also report an incident in person by visiting a reporting centre, see the full list at: www.sunderland-arch.org.uk.

Victims or witnesses of hate incidents have a number of options when reporting an incident to ARCH. People can report it anonymously if they do not want to leave their contact details or if they need support can leave their name in confidence.

People can also report racist, religious, homophobic or transphobic hate incidents to ARCH.
