South Forum Annual Event 2010

The South Forum would like to thank all those who took part in the community event which took place at Farringdon Primary School on Saturday 17th July 2010. We had 27 Statutory and Community Groups attend with an information or activity stall, some of those who took part were Northumberland Police, Coast Guards, Gentoo, NHS, Tyne & Wear Museums, Sunderland North Family Zone, Lakeside Art group, Age UK Sunderland, plus many many more. Over 300 people participated in the event.

Silksworth Ski SlopeA number of family orientated activities were available which included Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Holistic Therapies, Tombola, Music Desks and a Wii Bowling Competition - winner Chloe Conley age 9 who won a prize donated from Silksworth Ski Slope.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Silksworth Ski Slope for their generous donation.

A community consultation took place asking 'What would you like to see change in the South Area'. We had many responses such as more activities and community events for the young people, more police on the beat and more clubs and social events for the young adults, it has become apparent that the majority of replies request more activities for the young people with more amenities available for them to access.

The winners from the FREE Prize Draw are:

1st - Pat Cumiskey

1st winner

Feeling Fit, Looking Fine

The Jubilee Centre have now launched a Healthy Cookbook called ‘Feeling Fit, Looking Fine’ which enables the holder to a whole host of individual recipes which can be prepared or cooked within 20 minutes.

The cookbook is aimed at the whole family but also can be adapted and tailored to meet the client’s needs. The idea is to plan and target yourself to improve your health in some sort of shape or form, for example, lower cholesterol, lose weight, increase weight or lower blood pressure.

Signing up with the Healthy Plan and visiting the Jubilee Centre can offer lots of advantages such as using the in-house CHIP (Community Health Information Point) which can measure your weight, BMI, body fat content and blood pressure, along with this service we can sign post you to other services such as the in-house Stop Smoking Service and holistic classes(starting in September).

The cookbook comprises of 4 sections, Breakfast, Dinner, Tea and an information section. Each visit more recipes can be collected which can be suited to your taste until your target or targets have been met, by which point a healthy cookbook has been collated.

Since the launch of the cookbook on 17/7/10 we have had 12 sign ups with Ann Donkin – Gentoo being the first to sign up and visit the centre to use the CHIP machine and receive her cookbook, please see above.

An exciting opportunity has arisen from Kellogg’s who have sponsored the development of the Kellogg’s Champion workshop.

The workshop is aimed at anyone who works/volunteers within the community to help you to promote aquatic activities to those who do not currently participate in water activities and encourage them to get in the pool.

The workshop explores why people avoid the pool/water and how to engage community groups to attend aquatic activities. Anyone who works within a community setting can attend the training e.g. Health trainers, Groups like Women’s Institute, Slimming world, Sports teams, Councillors, NHS/PCT etc.

If you are or know anyone who fits this description and would be keen to learn a little more about how to promote aquatic activities please pass on details of the courses being held at:
