South Forum e-Newsletter 13th August 2008

Dear All,

Welcome to my first newsletter for the Forum. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Administration Officer for the Sunderland South Forum.

I have a diverse work history most recently I was Senior Recruitment Consultant for a not-for-profit Agency based in Sunderland for five years, previous to that for two years I was an NVQ Assessor for a training and development company also based in the Sunderland area and way before that I was based in the customer service sector.

I'm excited about joining the Sunderland South Forum and learning more about the community, local issues and events in the south area. An important part of my role is to information share so if anybody has any events or projects etc coming up please do not hesitate to contact me on 5228447 or via email lorna@southforum.org.uk

Volunteer Centre Sunderland

Introduction to Volunteering

The Volunteer Centre in Sunderland are planning to hold an ‘Introduction to Volunteering’ session for young people who may be interested in volunteering and would like to find out more.

The idea of the session is to introduce people to volunteering and give them the chance to meet with organisations who can offer a range of different opportunities.  The event will be split in two, lasting two hours in total:

1st hour - an informal introduction into volunteering, the role of the Volunteer Centre, the benefits of volunteers, myths regarding volunteers and claiming benefits etc

2nd hour - speed dating event with local organisations who are looking for volunteers.

This will be a great opportunity for anyone thinking of volunteering as it gives them the opportunity to have all their questions answered and the rare chance to meet with representatives from local organisations, on a one to one basis. To book a place contact Anna Johnson.

Friday 22nd August 10am – 12noon, Ryhope Community Centre

Should you require any further information regarding the volunteering please contact Anna Johnson 0191 567 8902 or email sunderlandvc@aol.com

Venerable Bede’s Extended School

Thank you to Lesley Jones who presented at the last South Forum meeting held on 28th July 2008 at St David’s Community Church. Here is a summary of the presentation:

The Venerable Bede’s Extended School is outward looking and actively engaged in community projects and developing links with partners including SAFC Foundation, Blue Watch Youth Club, the City Council (in particular Adult and Community Learning), Durham Heritage Coast and Fair Trade.

This summer holidays there are over 600 hours of activities for young people, a quarter of these activities are open to young people from across the community not just Venerable Bede’s students.

There is a regular term time Community Coffee Morning, Fridays 10am to 12 noon attended by people across the area. Over the past few months ladies attending and their friends have knitted toys and clothes that will be distributed in Lesotho, Tanzania, Romania, Northern India, The Philippines and Chad.

Community projects we are actively involved with include working with Streetcare, a Sunderland Charity working with rough sleepers in the town. Students bake and deliver food for the town centre drop in while some of the Community Coffee Morning parents/grandparents/friends of the school are taking on shifts over the summer holidays.

This has led to VB volunteers taking part in another local project linked to Streetcare, and in particular Sister Mary Scholastica – the Mission to Seafarers – which is trying to raise funds for a safe/warm place for visiting sailors as there is no longer a Seaman’s Mission. Ladies will be knitting warm hats, scarves and fingerless gloves for merchant sailors and Grandparent Betty Hall put out a request for spare wool or needles anyone has sitting around and would like put to good use. She also asked if any other organisations had fundraising ideas we would be interested in discussing ideas.

There will be a fundraiser in the South Area for the Mission to Seafarers at the Holy Rosary Church, September 12 at 7 pm  - Line Dancing and Ceildh – tickets £3 available from Denise Kellingray – a Ship Visitor – on 0191 5101408.

If anyone knows of any up and coming projects where students and volunteers at the school can get involved in please contact Lesley at the school on 0191 5239745 or email lesley.jones@venerablebede.co.uk
