Is to be held on
Wednesday 25th February 2009
At Northmoor Fire Station, Northmoor Road, Sunderland, SR3 1TJ
1.00pm start (12.30pm Buffet)
Guest speakers at the forthcoming library are:
Adrienne Rowly – Good Neighbourhood Coordinator – Age Concern
Good Neighbour Campaign
This is a new project launched in November 2008, in which the Good Neighbour Coordinator, Adrienne Rowly wants to get the people of Sunderland talking to their neighbours. It’s not just for older people, but across the generations especially the age group that goes out to work first thing in the morning and doesn’t return home until late evening.
Following on from this, she hopes to set up a Good Neighbour team of volunteers that could take on the small tasks that neighbours used to do or are unable to do now due to work commitments, age or disability etc.
Dorothy Alderton – St Oswald's Hospice
All children, young people and families like and need regular breaks and a chance to have some time out and fun. Parents and carers of children with a health condition that is likely to lead to a shortened life expectancy also feel that an important part of being a family is to have regular and planned ‘short breaks’. Will also be covering what facilities are provided at St Oswald’s and how it benefits the children and their families.
If you are unable to attend the meeting on the 25th February but would like to express an interest contact me via email lorna@southforum.org.uk or on 0191 522 8447
Did you know that you can become a member of the South Forum as an individual, a worker or as a representative of a group?
Why should you join the South Forum?
We can offer you the opportunity to share good practice and experience. We can also offer you the opportunity to build positive relationships with other South Forum members. There is a good mix of attendees from the statutory, voluntary and community sectors as well as individuals. This provides an effective forum for networking and information sharing. South Forum members are able to promote their group or service and meet informally with others.
Everyone is welcome to attend our monthly meetings so please come along. News from the South Forum
South Forum Annual Development Day The Sunderland South Forum was established in 2005 to promote the benefits of the Sunderland South communities of St Chad’s, Doxford and Silksworth by encouraging and supporting local people, workers and organisations to come together sharing ideas, information and skills. The South Forum management committee is dedicated to ensuring that the organisation is developed in a way that responds to the needs of the South Forum communities, and with this in mind held an organisational progress and planning review session on the 29th January 2009. If you live in Sunderland, you are going to be able to be part of the future of the city. There will be more effective ways for you to give your views and influence the decisions that affect you and your local area.
The City Council has established Local Area Committees across the city to provide a stronger link between residents, councillors and the council and to ensure that local views are represented. The City Council has already consulted residents about their overall priorities for the city and is now looking at local areas in detail. Every area of the city is different, and we’re asking you to tell us what you think are the priorities for the future of your community.
It’s your opportunity to get involved, have your say and make a difference. Your views do count, and will be fed back to the City Council through the Local Area Committees. Specific plans for services, facilities or projects will then be made for each area.

'Take the Lead' is a seven session programme delivered over 7 weeks (one full day a week). The programme aims to introduce participants to the local, regional and national structures that impact on their lives and encourage participants to make use of mechanisms to influence decision making at all levels.
We are looking for people who are just starting to get involved in community action/representation, those who maybe need a little more confidence and more information about how things work and fit together in order to get the best out of their participation.
Content of the programme (which leads to a locally accredited level 1 qualification through Open College Network) includes:
The cost per person is usually £830 but we have funding to provide full bursaries from the Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership.
The training will take place at ETEC in Hendon, apart from the regional visit when we will be taking participants to Government Office in Newcastle.
If you think this is something you may find an interest for from the groups you work with and would like us to come and discuss it further with you, please do not hesitate to contact either Diane Stephens or my colleague Allison Porritt on 01429 868 353.
