Race for Grace 2008

The Race for Grace 2008 will take place on Sunday 14th September 2008 at Herrington Country Park, Sunderland

The Aim

Grace House will provide a home from home for very sick children, support for their siblings and parents, respite and terminal care. A team of dedicated professionals offering the most up-to-date medical skills and palliative care. Support that is geared to needs of the whole family, physical and emotional. Help that will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year…continuing into bereavement for a s long as needed.

The purpose built hospice will be small, self contained unit, with bright homely rooms for children and accommodation for whole families. It will provide a much needed addition to existing services. Giving parents a break, a chance to talk about their fears and complex emotions, facing up to a future which can never be what they had hoped.

The Target

£3.5 million pounds has been the sum determined to build and equip Grace House.

The challenge is huge, but so is the need.

The news that a child has terminal illness is only the beginning of the process of bereavement. Grace House will support families whilst they travel along this heartbreaking road, sharing and creating happy memories and providing practical and emotional support where dreams and expectations are shattered.

We cannot change the outcome, but we can all help to make the journey just a little bit easier by providing the very best care wherever and whenever it is needed along the way. That is what Grace House believe these special children and their families deserve. Grace House will provide this for the Families throughout the North East, with the generous support and fund raising help thousands of other families.

Grace House needs donations, large or small, to meet the challenge ahead. Please spare a little time and money to make Grace House a reality.

For more information on the Race for Grace 2008 please contact Kathy Secker on 0191 5166302 or email info@gracehouse.co.uk Closing date for entrants is Friday 5th September 2008.

Flu Campaign 2008

It is at this time of year when we need to begin to think about preventing flu in our communities. This year the flu campaign has been extended to consider giving the vaccine in youth and community projects, where a nurse will come and administer the vaccination.

We need your support to organise a short presentation to the at risk groups, including young people. From the presentation we can estimate how many people are wishing to have their vaccination as an outreach service, in the projects and pre order the flu vaccine.

Further information:

It is estimated that around two million people in England under the age of 65 fall into a high-risk category making them eligible for a flu vaccine.

All those over the age of 65 automatically qualify for the free vaccination - and there is a high uptake in this group.

In 2006, 58% of younger at-risk people did not get a flu jab, leaving them particularly vulnerable to the side effects of the virus, which can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, hospitalisation or even death.

Anyone can get the flu it can be more serious for people aged 65 yrs or over and people who are younger (including children and young people aged over 6 months of age) with conditions such as asthma.

You may also be at an increased risk if you have diabetes that you have to use medication for, or you have you have a serious kidney or liver disease, or if you have lowered immunity due to disease or treatment.

Even if you are young, feel fit and healthy, if you fall into one of these groups you are more at risk from the effects of flu. You should get your flu jab in the autumn, September/October.

The flu vaccine is not a live virus; it makes your body produce antibodies to protect you and takes about 7 to 10 days to work. When shouldn’t you have the vaccine: if you have a serious allergy to hen’s eggs or if you have had an allergic reaction to the flu vaccine in the past. If you are not sure ask your doctor.

If you would like to arrange a presentation for your group please contact Angi Nordstrom or David Bailey for further information or to arrange an appointment on 0191 5489293.
